The Overnight. The nation stayed at Preparedness Level 5 overnight as wind flared two fires on the Big Sur coast and two Washington megafires topped 160,000 acres. In California, a wildfire liability bill sent utility stocks into their worst day in a generation.

The most active flames overnight were on the California coast, where the Plaskett and Timber fires jumped lines on gusty winds and shut Highway 1 across Big Sur. Washington still owns the country's largest open perimeters, the Sinlahekin and Little Giant fires, both past 160,000 acres and only partly contained. And the season's human cost mounted again: a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer was killed Sunday helping residents flee a fast-moving fire in southwest Oklahoma.

The money story may prove the most consequential of the day. California lawmakers unveiled a compromise wildfire liability package that left out the investor-expected protections, and PG&E and Edison International shares cratered, Edison's steepest one-day fall in more than 25 years.

Big Sur coast, Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties, California. 15,479 acres, 1% contained, 661 personnel, Highway 1 closed from mileposts 0 to 56.

The Plaskett Fire breached containment overnight Saturday into Sunday on strong, gusty winds, forcing crews into tactical firing operations to protect structures around Sand Dollar and Plaskett Creek. Seven mandatory evacuation zones and seven warning zones are in effect across the two counties, and the full closure of Highway 1 has severed the Big Sur coast. At 1 percent containment in steep, fuel-heavy terrain, it is the least-contained large fire in the country.

Why it matters. A near-zero-containment fire under a red flag wind event is the classic setup for a fast, dangerous run.

Big Sur, Monterey County, California. 24,970 acres, 21% contained, started Aug 8, two evacuation shelters open.

Just up the coast, the Timber Fire flared again Saturday on the same winds, with evacuation warnings pushed toward Carmel Valley and shelters open in Carmel and Cambria. Rockfall along the highway corridor has become a serious hazard for crews and closed routes. The two Big Sur fires together have brought coastal travel to a standstill.

Why it matters. Paired wind-driven fires on one corridor stretch aircraft and hand crews thin at the worst moment.

Okanogan County, Washington, near Tonasket. 166,413 acres, 40% contained, about 1,684 personnel, lightning-caused, started July 26.

The Sinlahekin Fire has grown to more than 166,000 acres but is now showing calmer, smoldering behavior as it moves into short-grass fuels, with containment building toward 40 percent. It remains the largest actively uncontained fire in the country by open line and continues to threaten Tonasket and area communications infrastructure. Growth appears organic rather than merger-driven, though evacuation zones have shifted repeatedly through the month.

Why it matters. Even a slowing megafire ties up nearly 1,700 people that other Western fires badly need.

Chelan County, Washington. 163,089 acres, 49% contained, about 1,634 personnel, at least 26 structures destroyed including 2 homes.

The Little Giant Fire, the state's second-largest active blaze, reported no significant growth or containment change on Sunday after earlier jumping Lake Chelan and destroying more than two dozen structures. Chelan County remains under a state-of-emergency declaration with staged evacuations along South Lakeshore Road. No injuries have been reported.

Why it matters. A lined but not-yet-contained fire above a resort lake keeps more than a thousand homes in play.

Palo Pinto and Jack counties, Texas. About 85,303 acres, 31% contained, 4 to 5 structures damaged or destroyed, started Aug 24.

Driven by a month-plus rainfall deficit, the Ross Fire is now the second-largest wildfire in North Texas history, with Texas A&M Forest Service and TIFMAS strike teams working the perimeter. Mandatory evacuations in Jack County were ordered and then lifted mid-week, and several school districts closed earlier. No deaths have been reported.

Why it matters. A fire this size outside the usual Western theaters signals how far drought has spread this summer.

Also burning.

Canada's latest federal update counted 582 active fires, 31 out of control, and about 4.1 million hectares burned so far this year, with more than 10,000 people under evacuation orders in British Columbia. In Europe, the EFFIS tally has passed 489,000 hectares burned across the EU in 2026, the fourth-worst year since 2012, led by Spain at nearly 186,000 hectares, roughly double its average. Fresh late-August incident and casualty figures for the strict 24-hour window were not independently verified.

Why it matters. Two of the world's most active fire theaters are running well above normal at once, tightening the global pool of crews and aircraft.

Railroad South Fire, Comanche County, Oklahoma. USFWS officer, 38; fire about 515 acres, roughly 30% contained; evacuation orders since lifted.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer based at the Wichita Mountains refuge died Sunday going door to door to help residents flee the fast-moving Railroad South Fire near Cache and Indiahoma. Evidence recovered from a structure where he was assisting a family indicates he was overtaken while helping a resident escape; formal identification was pending with the medical examiner. The fire itself stayed small, but its speed proved deadly.

Why it matters. The single most significant safety event of the period, and another line-of-duty death in an already deadly 2026 season.

Northern California and southern Oregon. Sustained winds about 25 mph, gusts to about 35 mph, red flag warnings Monday.

Red flag warnings were posted for Monday afternoon and evening over very dry fuels, with elevated fire risk forecast into Tuesday, precisely the conditions bearing down on the barely contained Plaskett Fire. Wind over cured fuels on poorly lined fires is the recognized precursor to rapid runs and entrapments.

Why it matters. The forecast is a direct, day-of warning for every crew on the Big Sur and southern Oregon lines.

North Texas and Katy, Texas. Willowfork FD engine struck head-on; crew hospitalized; number and severity undisclosed.

A Willowfork Fire Department engine assisting the Ross Fire was hit head-on when a truck towing a large trailer crossed into its path, shearing off the front wheel assembly and sending crew members to the hospital. The timing sits right at the edge of the window, around August 29 to 30. Vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of firefighter deaths.

Why it matters. Roadway risk, not flame, drives a large share of casualties on long mutual-aid deployments.

The capital story this cycle ran through utilities and insurance, not venture. Rounds were quiet.

California investor-owned utilities. EIX down about 23% to $54.22 (worst day in 25-plus years), PCG down about 18% to $13.57.

Shares of California's big utilities fell hard Monday after the newly surfaced legislation left out a $6 billion per-incident liability cap and any mechanism to refill the roughly $21 billion state Wildfire Fund, which is projected to be depleted after Eaton Fire claims. PG&E and Edison bond spreads widened on uncapped tail-risk fears, and PG&E said the bill "does not adequately address the financing risks."

Why it matters. A multi-billion-dollar repricing of wildfire liability directly shapes how much the utilities can spend on grid hardening.

California Legislature. $41B insured losses from the Jan 2025 fires cited; about $150,000 cap on some victim damages.

The package rejects Governor Newsom's push to bar insurers from suing utilities via subrogation but adds utility-favorable terms: blocking hedge funds from buying insurers' claims, capping certain victim damages, and limiting attorney fees. Newsom called it partial, saying "this system needs full structural reform, not a partial one." Edison separately reported more than $775 million in offers through its direct Eaton Fire compensation program.

Why it matters. The bill decides who ultimately pays for California wildfire losses: insurers, ratepayers, or utility shareholders.

Insurance-linked securities. Wildfire-exposed cat bond issuance at a record $5.18B year to date.

Even as primary carriers retrench in California, wildfire-exposed catastrophe bond issuance has hit a record $5.18 billion this year, including the California FAIR Plan's debut $750 million deal. On the venture side, no new wildfire-tech funding rounds surfaced from credible sources in the window; the freshest named raises remain weeks to months old.

Why it matters. Capital-market risk transfer is filling the gap primary insurers are leaving behind.

Detection sensors, Aug 31.

SenseNet said it acquired N5 Sensors' wildfire division, adding gas-sensor technology that detects chemical ignition signatures before visible flame plus a portfolio of 30-plus federal, state, municipal and utility customers. The company says it now runs a multi-layered detection network across 12 countries covering more than 400 million acres. Terms were undisclosed.

Why it matters. Pairing "pre-flame" chemical sensing with cameras and satellites shows the detection market maturing from point tools toward integrated platforms.

Federal workforce, Aug 14, effective Sep 13.

The Office of Personnel Management finalized rules extending the 25 percent hazard-pay differential to prescribed-burn work, not just wildfire suppression, effective September 13. The change covers ignition, holding, patrol, mop-up, and fireline construction, though pre-ignition prep is excluded.

Why it matters. It removes a longstanding pay disincentive to prescribed burning, the core preventive tool for fuel reduction.

Federal land policy, Aug 18, comment period open.

USDA formally acted to remove Roadless Rule restrictions on roughly 45 million acres, framing the rollback as enabling active fuel management and wildfire prevention. Conservation groups contest the wildfire rationale, and a public comment period is open.

Why it matters. It is the season's most consequential federal land-management shift, tying wildfire framing to how national forests can be roaded and managed.
